Demonstration of English Language Proficiency

As one measure of potential for academic success at Carey Business School, applicants whose first/primary language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in both written and spoken English.

To demonstrate proficiency, international applicants must submit official scores from the TOEFL iBT (Test of English as  a Foreign Language - Internet-Based Test), PTE (Pearson Test of English) scores, IELTS (International English Language Testing System), or DET (Duolingo English Test). The TOEFL code for the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School is 0834. IELTS, PTE, and DET do not require a code. The preferred minimum scores for each test are as follows:

TOEFL:     100
IELTS:       7.0
PTE:          70
DET:         130

International applicants may be exempt from this requirement, if they meet one of the following criteria:

  • The applicant completed an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited college or university in the United States
  • The applicant completed an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited college or university outside the United States where English was the ONLY language of instruction, as indicated on the university's website, transcript, and/or mark sheets.
  • The applicant has been employed and resided in the United States for at least four years immediately prior to applying.

Applicants can indicate in the "Supporting Materials" section of the application if they meet one of the above qualifications for exemption.

Applicants may be required to provide additional evidence of English proficiency if requested by the Admissions Committee for their individual program.

F-1 Visa Applicants

An international applicant requiring a student (F-1) visa to attend school in the United States must obtain admission well in advance of the start of the semester. The Carey Business School does not issue I-20 forms for provisional acceptance to a degree program, nor does it issue an I-20 for admission to any part-time programs, online programs, or certificate programs. I-20s are issued, however, for conditional admission to full-time, in-person Master’s degree programs.

Applicants who require a student (F-1) visa and who plan to attend Carey Business School must be applying to a full-time, in-person program and are highly encouraged to apply by the Round 2 application deadline, which is in January of the year the student plans to enroll. The latest an application can be considered for international students who require a student (F-1) visa and who plan to attend the Carey Business School is the Round 3 deadline for the fall semester, which is in March. No current full-time, in-person program at Carey Business School offers admission to start for the spring semester or the summer semester.

If a student's application and all other required documents are not received on or before the stated deadlines, Carey Business School may not be able to offer consideration for admission. For program application deadline dates, visit carey.jhu.edu/programs/admissions/how-to-apply/deadlines.

After receipt of the acceptance letter from the Carey Business School and payment of the non-refundable enrollment deposit (initial deposit for full-time MS programs), international students will be sent an email from the Office of International Services (OIS) with information on the steps required to receive an I-20 form. The email will be sent to the address listed in the student’s application. This message will be sent in early March or within one week of payment of the enrollment fee if the enrollment fee is due in April. If the information is not received, please contact OIS at ois@jhu.edu. Any international student interested in studying on a visa type other than F-1 or needing to transfer from another visa type to an F-1 should contact ois@jhu.edu for assistance.

Before an I-20 is issued, the international student is required to submit financial documentation to OIS via iHopkins, per OIS instructions. I-20 forms will not be issued until the student has accepted the offer of admission, the enrollment fee (initial deposit for full-time MS programs) has been paid, and all required documents have been uploaded to iHopkins.

An overview of the process and the documentation required can be found online at JHU Office of International Services.

Specific figures on the estimated expenses and the amount of funding required in order to be issued an I-20 can be found at the JHU Office of International Students - Carey - Expenses.

Note: Need-based financial aid is not available for international studentsAll applicants are considered for merit-based scholarships that are available in their program of admission Merit-based scholarships are limited, competitive, and availability can vary by program. Students receiving scholarship funding are notified at the time of admission.

International Credential Evaluation

Applicants who hold degrees from non-U.S. institutions must have their academic records evaluated by a NACES member organization before they can be considered for admission to a degree or certificate program. For degrees earned at non-U.S. institutions, an official course-by-course evaluation assessing the degree, the overall grade point average, and the courses taken, should be submitted. Final official course-by-course evaluations must show equivalency of a U.S. bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited university or college in the United States. Please do not send official foreign transcripts.

Special note for applicants with three-year undergraduate degrees from non-U.S. colleges and universities: In some situations, three-year degrees can be considered equivalent to a four-year U.S. bachelor's degree. In these cases, applicants can apply to Carey Business School. Before you begin your application and the credential evaluation process, please contact the Admissions Officer for your program for further guidance. Typically, World Education Services is the only credential evaluation agency that will provide an evaluation showing a three-year degree as being equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree.

For students with a three-year degree earned in India, Carey Business School will consider the degree equivalent to a four-year U.S. bachelor's degree regardless of evaluating agency used if:

  • The degree has been earned in Division I
    AND
  • The awarding institutions have been accredited by India's National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a grade of "A" or better.

Fees and required documentation for evaluations may vary. Applicants are encouraged to contact the agency directly for additional information. We accept evaluations from any NACES member agency.
