MD-MBA, Combined Degree Program

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine/Carey Business School

Admissions Application Process

Students applying to the MD/MBA program will be required to meet the admissions criteria of the JHU School of Medicine and be admitted to the MD program. If students are accepted by SOM and express interest in the MBA program, their application will be forwarded to the MBA Admissions Office for review by the Carey Business School. Admitted students will receive admission to the School of Medicine and the Carey Business School for the dual-degree program. Applicants must have an MCAT score, but the GMAT is NOT required.

Enrollment Options

This dual degree program has two enrollment options to pursue the MD/MBA program.

Option 1 – Direct Admissions/Deferment. Students can identify during the application process as interested in the dual degree program.

These students would apply to SOM for the regular MD program and will select the Combined Medical Degree/Graduate Program designation on the AMCAS application and the Dual MD/MBA on the Hopkins secondary application. SOM will first make its own admissions decision based on the applicant for the MD program.

Students admitted to the Regular MD program and are interested in the Dual MD/MBA program will then be considered by Carey. Applicants must comply with each Party's stated admission requirements for the Program. Applications and supporting documents will be shared between the Parties. SOM will retain the application fee. The admissions committees for each school will make their own independent admission decisions. Decision letters will be sent from each division.

Once admitted to the dual program, students will need to decide whether to do the MBA between years 2–3 OR between years 3–4 of the MD program. The student's admission to the MBA program will be deferred to the appropriate start term.

Option 2 – Current MD Students

We recognize that some students may not decide to enter the dual degree program until after they have matriculated within the SOM. Students in this situation can still apply to the dual degree program and complete the MBA coursework in between years 2–3 OR 3–4 of the MD program.

Students will need to first notify their SOM advisor and will be referred to Carey to complete their application for admission and will be evaluated by the Carey MBA admissions committee. Students will need to apply to Carey by the Round 2 deadline of the MBA application process during year 2 or 3 of the MD, which typically falls on the third or fourth week of January.

MBA Program Enrollment Details

Once admitted to the MBA program, students must participate in Foundations Week, which typically occurs two weeks prior to the fall semester of the MBA year.

For the Carey MBA program, students must complete 54 credits for the MBA degree. Carey will accept 18 credits from the MD program; students will need to complete 36 credits of the MBA program at Carey's Harbor East location.

Students can complete all 36 Carey MBA credits in one academic year. Alternatively, students may complete up to 32 Carey MBA credits in one academic year and take the remaining 4 credits in the third or fourth year of the MD program (depending on their enrollment option).
