Clinical Placements

All clinical placements are approved by Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. Students are responsible for having reliable transportation to all assigned clinical sites. Additionally, students are responsible for all expenses related to clinical sites including but not limited to travel (transportation, parking, fuel, housing, etc.) any clinical attire or equipment, additional compliance requirements (fingerprinting, etc.)

All compliance must be completed prior to the expiration, including  site compliance. All compliance must be submitted at least three weeks prior to the start of the rotation or clinical attendance may not be permitted. Clinical sites may request compliance earlier than the three-week time frame – in that case, students are required to complete compliance by that due date.

Please see below for specific program information.

Pre-Licensure Clinical Placements: A background check and drug screening must be updated annually as designated by the program administration . Each student will be assigned to a clinical site for the corresponding clinical course.  Students will be placed within one hour of the Baltimore Metropolitan area, excluding the NR.120.527 Integrated Clinical Management: Synthesis Practicum, which sometimes offers additional locations. Unless otherwise directed, the student is not to contact the site directly to request a placement.

If there is an extenuating circumstance identified (excluding transportation), the student should communicate with the clinical course coordinator as soon as possible.

Make-up clinical time will be completed each semester the week after final exams. All make up must be completed to progress to the following semester unless designated by the Program Director.

Advanced Practice Clinical Placements:  Johns Hopkins School of Nursing (JHSON) has a dedicated Clinical Placements Team to facilitate Advanced Practice students to acquire appropriate placement experiences to meet the course objectives of their program of study, competencies, and regulatory requirements. Each student is assigned a placement coordinator to assist with the clinical placement process. It is critical that students maintain regular contact with their placement coordinator to ensure timely placements. Students are requested to keep clinical requirements, CV or resume, and profile in Exxat current and inform the Clinical Placement Team of any changes in life events or location that may affect clinical placement.

Students will identify a preceptor within our existing partner network (facilities under contract with the School of Nursing).  If a placement is desired outside our existing partner network, students will work with the placement team regarding identifying a preceptor and securing a contract. No placement or clinical site identified by the student is guaranteed. Students are generally assigned to placements within 100 miles of their current address as listed in Exxat. Students are expected to have the flexibility to coordinate their available time for clinical placement with the preceptors work schedule (usually Monday through Friday). If a student refuses an appropriate placement, this may affect their progression in the program. Students are responsible for the cost of compliance requirements (including but not limited to background check and drug screen) related to their assigned site. Please refer to the Student Expectations Memo for additional information.
