PhD/MBA Dual Degree
Designed for exceptional scholars at the intersection of scientific discovery and strategic leadership, the PhD/MBA dual degree program—offered jointly by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Carey Business School—prepares students to translate complex research into actionable solutions that impact the global health care ecosystem. This five-year, full-time program allows current Johns Hopkins public health doctoral students to seamlessly integrate 36 credits of MBA coursework, focusing heavily on business fundamentals, strategic analysis, and the "Business of Health." Through a collaborative cohort model and real-world consulting experiences like the Innovation Field Project, graduates emerge uniquely equipped to lead cross-sector initiatives, drive innovation, and bring cutting-edge research to the global marketplace.
Admission Requirements
The dual PhD/MBA program is open exclusively to students who have already been accepted into or are currently matriculated in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Eligible doctoral students typically apply to Carey Business School during the second year of their PhD program. The Baltimore-based dual MBA program at Harbor East is designed for students who wish to earn a general management MBA degree as a complement to their doctoral studies. Approved students will take a Professional Development Leave from the Bloomberg School to complete their 36 credits of Carey MBA coursework onsite in Baltimore over the course of one academic year.
Program Requirements
The MBA portion of the PhD/MBA requires students to complete 54 Carey Business School credits. This includes 26 credits of full-time MBA Foundational Courses and 10 credits of Carey Business School elective courses. To reach the 54 credits for the MBA, Carey Business School will accept 18 credits of PhD coursework. Dual degree recipients receive both diplomas upon completion of both programs.
Students in the PhD/MBA program can complete their MBA coursework in one year, and all required MBA courses must be completed in-person at Carey's Harbor East campus location.
