MBA/JD Dual Degree
Available in both full and part-time formats, the MBA/JD program is a dual degree offered by the University of Maryland Carey School of Law and the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School to prepare students for complex challenges in business, industry, commerce, government organizations, and the nonprofit sector. The dual degree program will provide a unique opportunity to add another dimension to the educational preparation of students who seek management and leadership responsibilities in legal practice, financing and delivery of legal services, development of new legal services, establishing and managing law firms, as well as pursuing a career focused on law and business in national and international organizations and academic institutions. More information is available at this website JD/MBA.
The Johns Hopkins MBA is a STEM designated program. International students in F-1 status who complete the full-time version of this program and obtain post-completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) may be eligible for the STEM OPT Extension. Students should consult the Office of International Services if they have questions about this benefit.
Admission Requirements
Applicants need to apply to both programs separately. For more information on the University of Maryland Carey School of Law, please visit https://www.law.umaryland.edu/admissions--aid/apply/. For details on the application process for the MBA portion of this dual program, click here.
Program Requirements
The MBA portion of the JD/MBA requires students to complete 54 Carey Business School credits. This includes 36 credits of MBA Foundational Courses and Carey Business School elective courses. To reach the 54 credits for the MBA, Carey Business School will accept 18 credits transferred from the University of Maryland Carey School of Law. Students complete 76 credits which the University of Maryland Carey School of Law provides toward the JD and will accept 9 credits transferred from the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School to complete the 85-credit degree. Dual degree recipients will only receive both diplomas upon completion of both programs.
Students in the full-time version of the JD/MBA program can complete their 36 Carey credits of MBA coursework within two semesters. All required classes for the full-time version of the program must be completed in-person at Carey's Harbor East campus in Baltimore.
Students in the part-time version of the JD/MBA program may take up to a maximum of 6 years from admission to complete their degree requirements. Students enrolled in the part-time dual degree program may also use their MBA elective credits to earn one Specialization. However, no student is required to earn a Specialization to fulfill program requirements. Students may take any combination of elective courses that meet the credit requirement, whether they combine toward a Specialization or not. Specializations are optional and are simply a way to think about organizing elective courses. See the Flexible MBA portion of this catalogue for details on available Specializations.
Requirements for both the full-time and part-time versions of this program are indicated below.
