Program Requirements
To receive a PhD in Classics at Johns Hopkins University, students must successfully complete a range of seminar work and examinations and then write a substantial dissertation. This program in Classics is designed to be completed in five years, of which the first three are dedicated to seminar work and examinations, and the last two to the dissertation. Greek and Latin are offered in alternate years. In the fall semester, students will take AS.040.417 Survey of Greek Literature I: Homer to the Classical Period in the years when Greek is offered or will take AS.040.407 Survey of Latin Literature I: Beginnings to the Augustan Age in the years when Latin is offered.

Greek and Latin are offered in alternate years. In the spring semester, students will take AS.040.418 Survey of Greek Literature II: Hellenistic Period to Imperial Period in the years when Greek is offered or will take AS.040.408 Survey of Latin Literature II: Early Empire to the Post-Classical Period in the years when Latin is offered.

Students will take AS.040.816 Summer Independent Research every summer that they are enrolled in the program for 9 credit hours each. Students typically take this course four or five times.

During the student's first and second year, the department recommends that students take 2 DGS-approved seminars each fall/spring semester (for a total of 6 credit hours each semester, 12 hours per academic year). During a student's third year, it is recommended that they take 1 seminar per fall/spring semester (for a total of 3 credit hours each semester, 6 hours total during the academic year).

The course - AS.040.810 Exam Preparation - is taken twice during the student's third year for a total of 20 credit hours (10 credits in the fall and 10 credits in the spring).

The course - AS.040.815 Dissertation Research - is taken twice during the student's fourth and fifth years for a total of 40 credit hours. Students enroll in 10 credits in the fall and 10 credits in the spring for a total of 20 credits per year.
