Visual Arts Minor Requirements

Students minoring in visual arts may focus on studio art, fiber art, digital and analog photography courses, or any combination of offerings. 

Each student’s complete program of study must be approved by their assigned Art Faculty Mentor.

To declare an Art Minor, please visit https://advising.jhu.edu/completing-your-degree/declare-major-minor/. When completing the declaration form, please write to indicate an interest in studio art, fiber art, or photography (note: students who are unsure should choose studio arts).

  • Minors are required to complete five 3-credit or equivalent visual arts courses in addition to one core course. Core courses include AS.371.131 Foundation DrawingAS.371.133 Oil Painting I, AS.371.126 Fiber Art and the String Revolution, or AS.371.152 Digital Photography I. This course can be waived under special circumstances with the approval of a student's art faculty mentor. 
  • One 3-credit art history course is required. 
  • At least three of the required courses for the minor must be taken through the Program of Visual Arts at JHU.
  • Students may take courses for the minor at JHU-affiliated institutions, such as MICA, or through an approved study-abroad program.
  • Under special circumstances, with the director's approval, one 2-credit independent study course in the visual arts may be counted toward the minor, provided it is taken after the completion of one core course and a Visual Arts Elective course. 
  • All courses must be taken for a letter grade (cannot be graded as S/U), and students must receive a grade of C- or better to apply the course towards the minor.

The core course can be waived under special circumstances with approval of a student's art faculty mentor. However, the student must take an additional elective to ensure the completion of at least six 3-credit visual arts courses (unless one independent study of at least 2 credits is allowed).
