Clinical Placements

All clinical placements are approved by the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. Students are responsible for having reliable transportation to all assigned clinical sites. Additionally, students are responsible for all expenses related to clinical sites including but not limited to travel (transportation, parking, fuel, housing, etc.) any clinical attire or equipment, additional compliance requirements (fingerprinting, etc.)

All compliance must be completed prior to the expiration, including specified site compliance. All compliance must be submitted three weeks prior to the start of the rotation or clinical attendance will not be permitted.

Please see below for specific program information.

Pre-Licensure Clinical Placements

A background check and drug screening must be updated annually. Each student will be assigned to a clinical site for the corresponding clinical course.  Students will be placed within one hour of the Baltimore Metropolitan area, excluding the NR.120.527 Integrated Clinical Management: Synthesis Practicum, which sometimes offers additional locations.  Unless otherwise directed, the student is not to contact the site directly to request a placement.

If there is an extenuating circumstance identified (excluding transportation), the student should communicate with the clinical course coordinator as soon as possible. Please see the Religious Observance Policy for relevant requests.

Make-up clinical time will be completed each semester the week after final exams.

Advanced Practice Clinical Placements

The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing (JHSON) has a dedicated Clinical Placements Team to facilitate Advanced Practice students to acquire appropriate placement experiences to meet the course objectives of their program of study, competencies, and regulatory requirements. Each student is assigned a placement coordinator to assist with the clinical placement process. It is critical that students maintain regular contact with their placement coordinator to ensure timely placements.

Students will identify a preceptor within our existing partner network (facilities under contract with the School of Nursing).  Students are generally assigned to placements within 100 miles of their home address. While requests will be considered, no placement or clinical site identified by the student is guaranteed. In the rare instance that a student is unable to identify a preceptor, the student will be expected to complete their rotation/s in the Baltimore Area, provided there are sufficient preceptors available. All students must have a Maryland RN license before starting the first clinical rotation. Please refer to the Student Expectations Memo for additional information.
