The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Master of Science in Anatomy Education (MSAE) is a one-year program that provides specialized training in clinically based anatomy and related basic science disciplines, while enhancing communication skills through exposure to advanced educational theory and instructional methods. The curriculum supports a range of post-graduation pathways, including admission to professional schools in the medical and health sciences, teaching positions in higher education, and doctoral study in fields such as biology, biomedicine, anthropology, and evolutionary morphology.
Admission Requirements
-
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Official transcripts, personal statement, and two letters of recommendation
- Demonstrated proficiency in written and spoken English (for non-native speakers)
- Interview with faculty (conducted via Zoom)
This program may also be appropriate for professionals in other disciplines seeking specialized training in anatomical education.
This program does not qualify for F-1 or J-1 student sponsorship. Legal permanent residents and non-immigrants who are physically present in the United States and hold a status permitting full- or part-time study may enroll.
Tuition
Tuition for this program follows the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine rate for full-time graduate students. Students admitted to the program receive a scholarship that reduces tuition by 30 percent. Visit the Anatomy Education program webpage for additional information.
Fees
A nonrefundable application fee of $125 is required at the time of application. A one-time matriculation fee of $740 is also assessed.

Coursework
The program requirements include 4 online and 5 on-site courses that are held on the campus of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. The Anatomy Teaching Practicum course requires an essay that is submitted to the Johns Hopkins Library. Additionally, students must complete the following training in the Responsible Conduct of Research:
-
The online course “Responsible Conduct of Research (CITI)” through MyLearning should be completed during the first semester.
- The Bioethics in Anatomy and Anatomy Education session is offered annually by the program.

Learning Outcomes
Graduates of the Master’s in Anatomy Education Program will be able to:
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of normal adult human anatomy, including the structural basis of clinically relevant function at the gross and histological levels, foundational principles of embryological development, and key aspects of tissue and organ physiology.
- Design, perform, and demonstrate cadaveric dissections focused on clinically relevant tissues, organs, and organ systems.
- Apply pedagogical theory and evidence-based teaching practices to effectively communicate complex scientific concepts and foster critical thinking.
- Design and conduct a research project examining the structure, function, and/or development of anatomical systems, or advancing methods and theory in anatomical education.
- Communicate effectively in written and oral forms across formal and informal settings, collaborate productively in team environments, and demonstrate resilience and adaptability in professional contexts.
- Apply knowledge and experience gained during the program to develop and implement a strategy for achieving their professional goals.
