Italian Major Requirements
(Also see Requirements for a Bachelor's Degree.)
These requirements apply towards students entering JHU in Fall 2024.
The major requires completion of language courses through Advanced Italian I and II (AS.210.351 Advanced Italian I-AS.210.352 Advanced Italian II), and four to five additional courses, depending on the linguistic track the student chooses (regular, or accelerated). A minimum of 15 credits counting toward the major must be taken at the 300 or 400 level. At least nine credits of upper-level courses counting toward the major must be taken at JHU on the Homewood campus. At least three credits of these must be a 300 or 400 level course with the POS-Tag MLL-PITAL or MLL-MITAL. All major requirements must be completed with a grade of C- or better and may not be taken satisfactory/unsatisfactory.
Writing and Communication in the Major
Students must complete at least 6 credits of Writing and Communication Foundational Ability coursework in one major. Students would be able to fulfill this requirement by completing either Advanced Italian I and Advanced Italian II or, if needed, other elective courses for the major.

Italian Elements I and II and Intermediate I and II may be waived through appropriate proctored placement exam scores. Please note that the Italian placement exam does not grant credits.
- 2
Students placing out of Advanced Italian I and/or II will have to take an equivalent number of credits at the 300 or 400 level. These courses need to have the following numbers and tags: 211.3xx-4xx with POS-Tag MLL-ITAL, MLL-MITAL or MLL-PITAL, or 214.3xx-4xx.
Sample Program of Study
The plan is conceived as a guideline for students starting with no previous skills in Italian language. The sequence of language courses is strongly recommended in order to complete all the requirements for the major by senior year. It is conceivable, though, to postpone Italian Elements to sophomore year.
