Direct Matriculation: International Studies B.A./M.A. Program with the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS)

Johns Hopkins University offers an accelerated consecutive degree program drawing upon its resources at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) located in Washington, D.C. The Bachelor of Arts/Master of Arts Direct Matriculation Program (BA/MA DMP) is a 3+2 model.  BA/MA DMP students are accepted upon admission to the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (KSAS).  BA/MA students complete the first three years (years one through three) of the program pursuing their undergraduate degree at KSAS, and the following two years (years four and five) at SAIS finishing any remaining undergraduate requirements (fourth year) and pursuing the Master of International Relations degree.  The BA is awarded after completion of the fourth year of study and the MA after the fifth year.

Students must indicate that they are applying for the SAIS BA/MA DMP on their admissions application to the university and complete the Direct Matriculation Program: International Studies supplemental form by the application deadline.

During years where there is capacity, JHU may offer admission to the BA/MA program to qualified first-semester sophomore KSAS students.

Students admitted to SAIS through the BA/MA DMP will have required courses to complete while at Homewood: Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, and Statistical Analysis I or II.  Students must also maintain a minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.5 to remain eligible.

Progress toward the B.A./M.A. Degree

SAIS BA/MA DMP consecutive degree students complete most of the undergraduate degree requirements at Homewood in years one through three and the MAIR at SAIS in years four and five. Students may decide to spend both years at SAIS in DC at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Center or attend one of SAIS’s international campuses for the first year (SAIS Europe in Bologna, Italy or the Hopkins-Nanjing Center in Nanjing, China) followed by two to three semesters at the DC campus.

Students selected for the SAIS BA/MA DMP may study abroad during their Homewood years on a case-by-case basis and should discuss their plans with the International Studies Program Director before submitting an application to the Global Education Office.
