Visual Arts Minor Requirements
Students minoring in visual arts may focus on studio art, fiber art, digital & analog photography courses, or a combination of two tracks.
Each student’s complete program of study must be approved by their assigned Art Faculty Advisor.
To declare an Art Minor please visit https://advising.jhu.edu/completing-your-degree/declare-major-minor/ and when completing the declaration form please write whether you are interested in studio art, fiber art, or photography. If you are unsure, please choose studio arts.
- Minors are required to complete five 3-credit or equivalent visual arts courses.
- One 3-credit art history course is required.
- One foundation class in drawing, oil painting, fiber or digital photography is required as one of the five courses. This course can be waived under special circumstances with the approval of your art minor advisor. These courses include: AS.371.131 Foundation Drawing, AS.371.133 Oil Painting I, AS.371.126 Fiber Art and the String Revolution, or AS.371.152 Digital Photography I.
- At least three of the required courses for the minor must be taken through the Center for Visual Arts program at JHU.
- Students may take courses towards the minor at JHU affiliate institutions such as MICA or an approved study abroad program.
- One 2 credit independent study course in the visual arts may be counted toward the minor.
- All courses must be taken for a letter grade (cannot be graded as S/U) and students must receive a grade of C- or better to apply the course towards the minor.

The core course can be waived under special circumstances with approval of your art minor advisor. However, the student must take an additional elective to ensure the completion of at least five, 3-credit, visual arts courses (unless one independent study of at least 2 credits is allowed).
